How far do you think we could have advanced technologically if not for the power of the almighty dollar? Grant it, we have come a long way in the past 200 years. The human species has evolved from horseback transportation and muskets to Jaguar automobiles and laser guided rockets. However, how much further could our technology have carried us if not for the intervention of those driven by greed and power? It happens all the time and so much could have been spawned from ideas driven by those that were stifled in creation.

1. A Better Product - There have always been competition in the world of those who invent an item and those that improve upon it. Instead of seeking a more efficient method than the current item, many are drawn to the instant glitter of the lawsuit. What does this mean to the general populace? Tax payer money is wasted and no new innovations are created. Why not focus on your inferior product to beat out the competition and prove your innovations are superior? Because it is easier to launch a lawsuit. Thomas Edison launched a smear campaign against AC technologies hindering Nikola Tesla's innovative ideas of providing power to the masses instead of developing a better device and/or delivery system. Apple is famous for slanderous comments made about competitors especially when it comes to the cost of an operating system.

2. Reinventing the Wheel - I've heard this comment so often that it makes me sick. It means that why should one design a product that is tailored perfectly for their goals when other products exist on the market? What many of these people don't realize is that this "reinvention" of this so-called "wheel" is what drives a majority of the technological market currently. Can you remember the last time anything was truly invented by a company that didn't include products from other previous inventions? Apple didn't invent touchscreens, cordless phones, GPS, or chat servers that are found in your smartphone. They simply created a more efficient way to utilize these products simultaneously. But, they'll sue anyone trying to make a move in their turf. Isn't that called a monopoly? Even Smart TVs are only an adaptation of technologies already created.

3. Cost of Creation - Everyone wants to make a buck. The only reason why goods cost as much as they do is because everyone involved within its creation wants to make a dollar. Want a tablet with 1TB of storage capacity? Something like that would cost close to $1500 because Kingston wants to sell the memory for more than $1000. It's the same physical dimensions as the others with newer techniques that allow the chip to store more data. They want to maximize their profits. There's nothing wrong with capitalism. But it is responsible for our limited growth as a species. Since everyone needs money in order to survive in today's world, anyone involved in the development of any kind of innovative product requires a paycheck.

A new way of governing patents and lawsuits needs to be developed for today's world. Regulations and laws of the past are becoming obsolete one-by-one. Frivolous arguments are being perpetuated because someone can see the money in the situation. There was a time where inventions were a way to improve the species. Now, they are viewed more as a way to get rich and nothing more.

For those keeping score, that's roughly 1,000 gigabytes of data on a device the size of the average thumb.

With more storage capacity than most laptops, the Kingston 1TB flash drive is poised to make a fully mobile-data lifestyle possible. Customers will be able to transport their settings, music, movies, and files, to every device in their lives without carrying a laptop or removable hard drive with them. That's a big deal in a world that values thin and light over large and more useful.

1. The URL is important – when you first create your blog make sure that the URL you choose is easy for people, and search engines, to remember. A sting of random letters and numbers is not the best idea. Dashes and dots do not work well wither. Instead go for something memorable, simple and pertinent to your blog’s niche topic. You should also pay attention to how additional pages and posts on your blog are formatted in the URL. If a new page or post does not come up as backslash and the name of the post, then you might want to fix that. The URL is often the first place a search engine will look. That brings us to…

2. Title appropriately – The title of you blog post is one of the most important parts. This is what the people and the search engines will come across before they ever see your actual writing. You want the title to not only catch people’s attention, but also give some insight into what you post is really about. Do not go for random, eclectic or cute titles. Yes, you can be creative but stay within the bounds of rationality. Your best bet is to keep your title shorter than ten words and use key words that people search for. You can find out what people are searching for with a variety of programs, some that are free. You can also use name recognition in your titles to get more hits. Name recognition is when you include a famous name, real or fantasy, in a blog post title. People like Batman, Clark Kent, or Robert Downey, Jr. are all well-known and well searched names. When you include names like that in your title not only do people want to read it to find out what connection they have with your blog, but your blog post also comes up in searches that have to do with those name, bringing you new audiences that you would have otherwise never have reached.

3. Tag your blog posts –Tagging comes with many different terms. Sometimes they are called categories. But whatever the case may be, this is your opportunity to tell the search engines what you post is really about. Shoot for a dozen tags or less per post or this can backfire on you and never, ever tag a post with something it is not really about. That is a good way to get your blog on the search black list. Make sure you know what tags are being searched for and which ones are plural or singular. It will not do you any good to tag a post “tech” if people search for “technology” and vice versa. Know who your audience is and what terms they use to search.

4. Use keywords –Like tagging, keywords are important. Search engines ‘see’ how many times you use a word or phrase in a post. You do not want to go overboard or you will get penalized again, but you should repeat a key word or phrase a few times in a blog post for the best effect. It is just another way to get the search engine to connect your blog post with what peole are searching for. Make sure whatever keywords you use are the words people search for or this will not help you at all.

5. Know what people are searching for – As I have said many times now, know your audience. Search engine optimization is only there to get you more traffic. You want to rise in the rankings so that people can find your blog. Well, there is no point being number one in a search for “flibbertigibbets” if your blog specializes in “whatchamacallits”. Plus people are not searching for either of those terms (at least not a lot of people) so try more generic terms like “funny words” to really get your target audience’s attention. The history of searches is your new best friend. Get to know what people are searching for in your niche and then write about it. It is just that simple.

6. Stay in your niche – I have been talking about a niche this whole time with the assumption that your blog has one. It does, right? If not maybe you should think about getting one, like now! A blog without a niche is like a compass without a point. Potentially interesting but not very useful. You need to know what your blog is about, who your audience is, and what they want. Without that information you can SEO all day long and not get anywhere. Make sure you are passionate about whatever topic you pick because blogging about it every day will get very annoying if you are not. Not only that, but readers and search engines know when you are faking an interest in something. So, my advice is love it or do not do it at all.

7. Become a part of the community –No blog is an island. No matter what you write about you will have other blogs out there writing about the same things. They are not just your competitors, though. They can be a big help to you if you let them. Become a part of the blogging community and share resources. Let other bloggers know the latest news that pertains to your niche, cooperate and share your audience, and you can even guest post on each other’s sites for additional help. I know this sounds farfetched, but blogging together is much more effective then blogging separately. Together you can verify your existence, as it where, to the search engines and the readers.

8. Be social –This time we will focus in on the audience. Social media is a great way to communicate with your blog followers and keep in contact with readers. It is much shorter and simpler then emailing notifications of new blog posts and so on, plus it gets you bonus points with search engines. If you get your name out there and your blog talked about on things like Facebook and Twitter then you are the real deal. Human interaction is the name of the game here, and social media is the way to get it.

9. Encourage interaction –Like I said, human interaction. A good blogger encourages comments on their blog posts. I know that some bloggers turn off comments to avoid spam and hacking, but that is like locking the door when the store is open. Sure you might get a few bad guys in, but you will also get a lot of readers, and that is what you want. Interaction shows that a blog is alive and worthy of notice, so try to encourage your readers to comment with questions and other incentives.

10. Get your name out there –Last but not least, get your name out there. Donate money, help a charity, guest post, offer to do things for free, join a group. Whatever you have to do to get your blog’s name out in the world, in places other than your own site. The more your name is used by others, the higher your search ranking will be.

Photography Tips for Great Portraits - Guest Post

Every phone currently made has a camera now. So, it would only make sense that we all take great pictures, right? Well, the pictures on Instagram seem to dispute this fact. In many cases the worst pictures are actually of people. Photographed in strange positions, with duck faces, or even in the mirror with their shirt raised to show off their six packs, these portraits would make even an amateur photographer cringe. 


Here are some better ideas for portraits that you would actually be proud to see posted to your Facebook wall.

Standing

  Different Angles

1.       Thin - To make the subject seem thinner, take a photo from the side. Have them bend the leg farthest from the camera up slightly (about 45 degrees) and place one hand on the hip facing the camera. The other hand should be raised above there shoulders: placed on top of their head like they are holding back their hair or they can point to something in the distance. This will create the optimum thinness illusion. You can also try a variation of this by having the subject cross their arms across their chest with the hand closest to the camera on the subject’s chin, or just crossed.

2.       Firm rear – To show off a curvy and firm rear end, take the photo from behind. Have the subject turn their body about ten percent in the camera’s direction so it is not straight on and then have them look over their shoulder at the camera. Their hands should be at their sides and flat against their thighs. You can also try a variation of this with their hands on their hips.

3.       Tiny waist –Another side photo, in this one have the subject put the leg closest to the camera slightly behind them, keeping it straight with their toes touching the ground. Have them lean forward and put their hands over their head, palms touching. Have the subject stretch out in the position, the hands and foot moving back as the chest and waist are pushed forward, forming a C shape.

Full Frontal

4.       Stick thin – If your subject wants to look tall and show off their natural shape, try having them stand straight but on tip-toes. Put their hands at their side palms down and parallel to the ground. Alternately, they can stand flat with their legs slightly wider apart then their shoulders in a relaxed position with their head cocked slightly to the side. If a female subject wants to show off her cleavage, she can stand with feet apart, hands on hips, and lean towards the camera at an 80 degree angle. Have her cock her hip slightly and make sure her hair stays back.

5.       Curvy – To make a subject look more voluptuous, have them bend one leg slight in front of the other. This automatically creates more curves. You can have the subject raise on or both hands above their head to make their waist look narrower. Or put hands on hips or at their side to create a leggy look.

Seated

A chair can be a versatile prop and offer many poses that standing can’t. Try having your subject sit in a plain, unpadded, and open backed chair for the best effect.

            
 Side Shot

1.       Leggy – Sitting sideways in a chair shows off more leg. Make sure the subject has their toes pointed and not flat for the best effect. Have the subject cock their head as they look towards the camera. They can also lean their head back and balance with one hand on the seat behind them. For extra leg wow, have the subject raise the leg farthest from the camera to a 45 degree angle, keeping it straight. The matching hand should be wrapped around the ankle and the head leaning forward. The other leg should remain touching the floor at a 90 degree angle.

2.       Sleek – Have the subject lean back in the chair with the leg farthest from the camera bent and clasped between their hands. Do not have the leg get too close to the chest and the arms should be almost fully extended. The other leg should be raised slightly off the floor as they balance. Make sure the subject’s hair is over the shoulder farthest from the camera so the sleek lines can be fully appreciated.

 Full Frontal

4.       Daring – For the brave at heart, have the subject face the camera and spread their legs further apart than the legs of the chair with their toes pointed and touching the ground. Their hands should be on their knees and they should be leaning forward slightly. Have them look to the side and not directly at the camera.

5.       Sweet – Have the subject sit up straight and cross their legs with their hands in their lap. Alternately, they can sit with their legs down and put their elbows on their knees with their hands supporting their face as they lean towards the camera. 

 Chair Play

6.       Balanced – Have the subject turn their back towards you at a diagonal with the chair and with their calves up on the back of the chair. The arm closest to the camera should hold onto the chair leg behind them and the other hand should be on the chair back or on their head. Have them look over their shoulder at the camera.

7.       Dynamic – Turn the chair sideways and have the subject sit in it with the back of the chair between their legs, their forearms should be resting against the top of the chair’s back and hands relaxed. Their toes should be pointed and angled slightly near the chair’s legs. They should sit up straight and turn their head to face the camera, forming a box shape with the chair. Alternately, have the subject face the camera and lean one elbow on the chair’s back, supporting their face with that hand. The hand closest to the camera should be clutching the back of the chair. Have the subject straighten out the leg closest to the back of the chair and bend the other leg up until their heel touches the chair leg.

8.       Bold – Have the back of the chair face the camera and the subject sit with their legs around the chair’s back. Have them place one elbow on the top of the back of the chair and support their face with that hand. The other hand should be relaxed over the top of the chair’s back. 

High and Low

Taking pictures from above or below your subject is a great way to shake things up. Try a small stepladder for high pictures and get low to the ground for low pictures. Low pictures make the subject look more powerful and also longer legged. High pictures make the subject look more submissive and dramatic.

Down Low

  Looking Down – It is all about attitude. When the subject looks down at the camera it displays a stronger and more dominate attitude. Have the subject look straight down at the camera or keep their head level but their eyes looking down.  
Looking Up- For a different approach have the subject look into the distance, look up, or even close their eyes.

Up High

Clothing – Your subject’s choice of clothing and footwear will make a dramatic impact on these shots. Tighter clothing is better and shoes that have an interesting top are recommended.
Eye lines – Have the subject cock their head and look up at the camera. Alternately, have them look back over their shoulder. 

You should also play around with different facial expressions to see what looks best. There is a ton of ways to get good photos. All it takes is a little effort and a lot of shots to capture the perfect pose. Thankfully, having digital cameras and phone cameras means you don’t have to pay for film. Just have fun clicking away and see what great shots you can capture!

You are lucky that Twitter only gives you a certain amount of characters but as for the other social media platforms you have free range, type wisely.

4.       Actions speak louder than words: If your profile bio states that you are a lover of all things potatoes and cute kittens. You better believe you better have some sort of post of cute kittens and potatoes. Your bio tells your viewers what you are all about; it’s the first impression and introduction. With that said if your bio states you like to go skydiving, we know you won’t be able to do that daily, so keep in mind you need to live up to your bio.

The Solar Panel Boom… Is it about to crash? - Guest Post

It’s fair to say that over the past decade solar panels have become more popular then ever before, the introduction of incentives meant that consumers found solar panels irresistible – they provided the perfect solution. Consumers found that solar panels would provide a way to save money, generate income, increase property value and apart from the financial benefits they were a way to do their bit for the environment. At this point there was one question on every consumer’s mind; why wouldn’t I think about having a solar panel installation? I am now worried that this question has reverted to the old question; why should I think about having solar panels installed?
The reason I am worried that consumers are now loosing interest in solar panels is simply down to the reduction of the feed-in-tariff in the UK. This incentive (in my opinion) was the back bone of the solar industry, it gave consumers reason to invest in solar panels and I believe you will agree with me when I say that an investment with a reduced return will be less lucrative to potential buyers and this is the exact case with solar panels.
Although I believe the reduced rates are actually not bad at the moment, its set to change in the next few months as that tariff is set to see another reduction. A reduction that I believe may have catastrophic consequences. As well as the further reduction consumers will require EPC certificates before any installation goes ahead, at a cost to the customer. It seems that the government is continuing to place objects in the way thus making it harder for anyone to even consider having such an installation.
There not a lot that anyone can really do, two appeals and a few court cases later and we (as an industry) are no further forward. I completely understand that with the current economic climate its hard to find the funds the reduction in incentives is only going to be worse. Job losses have already increased since the change and some leading installation companies have reduce their work force by a considerable amount.
There are two simple questions I would like to ask the UK Government. If or when our economic situation is no longer a situation, will the Feed-in-Tariff for Solar Pv be increased? And can we expect the same situation of reductions with the Solar Thermal RHI?

Facebook’s IPO: What Does It Mean?

When a company like Facebook wants to be traded publicly on the stock market they apply for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) for a certain amount of money. Facebook announced last week that they were applying for an IPO for $5 billion, and based on the shares this amount will buy, the valuation of the company is upwards of $75+ billion. The media frenzy that ensued did everything they could to dissect the possible effects the move will have on all factors involved.

Several people including myself are worried that Facebook is outdated and their attempts to redesign the template and features offered to its users are feeble in the grand scheme, long-term scope of the business. Obviously Facebook isn’t hurting for business with 845 millionusers, so the IPO isn’t to keep things afloat, but rather to get some quick, liquid cash for possible acquisitions.

Most people have a curious attitude when it comes to the IPO, there is little evidence to suggest people will be fighting over shares; however, everyone does seem to be tuning in just to see what is going to happen next. Especially where the early Facebook employees are concerned, a lot of people who started out with the company took stock options instead of money. Their shares are going to be worth little fortunes now that the valuation deems them so. The big question will be whether or not they stay at Facebook, take the money to play or to start their own companies. Investors are far more interested in getting in on the ground floor of a former Facebook employee who goes off on their own to do something new with the knowledge they’ve garnered and skills they’re honed over the last several years than they are in investing in Facebook itself.

The questions of privacy rage on, and going public only raises those concerns to a near shout in the media. The day to day is unlikely to be changed in any way for quite some time. I certainly won’t be rushing out to buy shares, but my curiosity has been piqued and I will be keeping tabs on the progress.
