Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the Social Media site Facebook has reached 1 Billion Active users Today.

Mark Zuckerberg has updated his Facebook Status with below announcement.

This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.

If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.

Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.

I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.

And, Facebook has shared key metrics. Read below some of them.

- Facebook has seen Over 1.13 trillion likes since launch in February 2009
- 140.3 billion friend connections
- 219 billion photos uploaded
- 17 billion location-tagged posts, including check-ins
- 62.6 million songs have been played 22 billion times - that’s about 210,000 years of music
- Facebook now has 600M mobile users
- The median age of the user is about 22
- The top five countries where people connected from were Brazil, India, Indonesia,Mexico and the United States (NOTE: in alphabetical order)

And, in another Facebook Status update Mark Zuckerberg has mentioned that Facebook is similar to Chairs, doorbells, airplanes, bridges, games which connect people.

Celebrating a billion people is very special to me. It's a moment to honor the people we serve.

For the first time in our history, we've made a brand video to express what our place is on this earth.

We believe that the need to open up and connect is what makes us human. It's what brings us together. It's what brings meaning to our lives.

Facebook isn't the first thing people have made to help us connect. We belong to a rich tradition of people making things that bring us together.

Today, we honor this tradition.

We honor the humanity of the people we serve.

We honor the everyday things people have always made to bring us together:

Chairs, doorbells, airplanes, bridges, games. These are all things that connect us.

And now Facebook is a part of this tradition of things that connect us too.

I hope you enjoy this video as much as we do.

Thanks for helping connect a billion people.

It seems Indian Government is also started using Social Media effectively.

Today (September 25th, 2012) we had seen a Press conference of Indian Govt Official on Twitter first time.

The Twitter press conference was conducted by Sam Pitroda who is the Adviser to the Indian Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations (PIII).

The Twitter conference started at 3:30 PM IST to discuss about "Democratisation of Information". And, this conference uses #DoI as hastag. And this hastag #DoI was trending for many hours in India.

Sam Pitroda uses the Twitter Handle @pitrodasam for this online twitter Conference.

Right now he is having 29K Twitter followers. Sam Pitroda is the key person in bringing Telecom revolution in India. Apart from being the Advisor to PM, Same Pitroda is an Inventor and Entrepreneur.

Sam Pitroda had started the conference by asking his Twitter followers to watch his YouTube video about "Democratisation of Information". And Sam explained the reason for using Twitter for the online conference.

Then Sam Pitroda has announced "#DoI" as the hastag for today's conference. And, he says, "I firmly believe that #Information is the 4th pillar of #democracy along with legislature, executive and judiciary"

And, then Sam Pitroda has given below information thro multiple tweets.

Information brings about openness, accessibility, transparency, accountability, networking, decentralisation & as a result #democratisation.

Information is power and not many wish to share. Info is critical for development and needs to be timely available to people. Now that #India is a country of a billion #connected people, the challenge is to create a new paradigm for #development
Public #Information Infrastructure (PII) will transform India’s 1.2 billion people into 1.2 billion opportunities.
UPA Govt has various plans to build robust Information Infrastructure to democratize information on a scale that has never been done before UPA Govt also has political will to make it happen.
This will have far reaching implications on delivery of #public services, #Governance, #Education, #Health, #Agriculture, etc.

However, it will require new mindset and commitment of the young to change the course.
PII includes the NKN to connect 1500 nodes for universities, colleges, R&D labs, Libraries, etc. Visit http://www.nkn.in

PII also includes fibre connectivity to all 250000 #panchayats

To build PII, we need multiple open platforms for Broadband, UID, GIS, Security, Applications, Payment and Portals

I believe that the NKN is a game changer and is going to revolutionise the way we #connect, #collaborate and deliver #education.

The NKN has enormous possibilities: Virtual Classrooms, Research Collab, etc.
We have the #open government platform at http://www.data.gov.in will provide access to govt. data and documents. We need your support and help in making this happen. Please visit our websites and give us your ideas and inputs. All this will require innovations, new business models, process reengineering, new products and new services and lot more.

Then Sam Pitroda has started answering questions asked by the Twitter users.

Question:Is democratization of info possible without a radical change in the mindsets of our legislators and bureaucrats?
Answer:No. But we need to start now. It will take time.

Question:What does #DOI "Democratisation of Information" mean for a villager who does not have access to information?
Answer: The purpose is to give them access to information

Question:how can wireless broadband internet access be scaled up to the ubiquity achieved by the STD booth that revolutionised telephony?
Answer:all 250,000 Panchayats will have fibre connectivity to ensure ubiquity

Question:Will DOI have the same fate as RTI? National security and till when will it be used to curtail info?
Answer:Certain sensitive information will have to be controlled by the government

Question:the project to connect 250k panchayats has been talked about for years-cud u tell us what is being done to speed it up?
Answer:Pilot projects on Panchayat connectivity already underway, hopeful it will be done in next 18 months

Question:Shouldn't information be the foundation for other three? (in reply to Sams' tweet about 4 pillars)
Answer:YES. However Information platform is needed to integrate ,create standards and improve access

Question:Why is computerization of tasks, performance monitoring and evaluation not being done in Ministries, Govt. departments.
Answer:We are infact doing exactly that! Delhi High Court is a good example.

Question:Appreciate the National Knowledge Network #DoI How can such a network be replicated amongst districts in a state? Any Plans?
Answer:NKN is already in all States upto Block level and State Governments have to leverage it

Question:why a separate infrastructure and investment is needed why can't the existing network be used ?
Answer:we are using all existing infrastructure and not duplicating! A million km of OFC already exists

Question:Why u think that democratization of information means only the information provide by Government?
Answer:Agree. It is not just govt. Education ,Health,Agriculture, etc is more for the people and by the people.

Question: I would want to use the data at http://data.gov.in in useful apps for people, but will it be updated with latest copies of it?
Answer:Work underway to get more data on http://Data.gov for citizens to develop relevant applications

Question:how can citizens contribute to this agenda?
Answer:citizens can develop relevant useful information and apps in local languag

Question:Sir please elaborate about NKN. The report has been submitted long ago but nothing substantial has happened. Situation now?
Answer:NKN is already operational, 850 institutions are connected, visit website nkn.in to get status update

Question:How will you go about executing the idea and in how much time?
Answer:Various dept will decide that. First there will be some concerns. However, I am sure after a while dep will be more open.

Question:250,000 Panchayats with OFC..any time line and budget allocation for the same?
Answer:Around Rs. 30,000 Crores in 18 Months

Question:All info would be made available or do restrictions apply?
Answer:Depends on the source of the info.

Question: sir in process to implement e governence what is biggest hurdle-power or lack of initiative?
Answer:Reengineering of processes is a big hurdle!

Question:Apart from connectivity, what concrete policy changes are planned to democratise information? What synergies with RTI?
Answer: It starts with RTI. To back it up, we need PII. And then provide access to real time info to ppl on demand.

Question:Why is internet access, which is a basic right in many countries, so expensive in India?
Answer:Hopefully prices will go down as we get more broadband capacity and OFC to panchayats

Question: will UPA deliver NOFN within this term?
Answer:NOFN fibre being laid by BSNL, PowerGrid, railtel, private players also being used to lay fibre

Watch the below slideshow about PIII initiatives in India.

Social Media especially Facebook and Twitter are growing very fast. And, they are becoming professional/business tools. I had published many posts about the fast growth of the Social Media. And, we had created many scripts for utilizing the Social Media effectively for the business growth.

Recently, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had published his marriage photo in his Facebook profile. Since his marriage was happened secretly without the knowledge of the traditional Media (i-e Television and Print Media).

My facebook News Feed was immediately updated with the Mark Zuckerberg's Marriage photo within few minutes. So, I was able to get the news quickly without requiring the print media or television or any news reporters.

And, therefore I just prepared a simple video about the marriage of Mark Zuckerberg and Pricilla Chan using the information available from Facebook profile of Mark Zuckerberg and Pricilla Chan. And, then I uploaded this video in YouTube before the main stream sites publish the News about Mark Zuckerberg's marriage.

You can watch below this video.

This video may not be high quality. But it conveyed the message about surprise marriage of Mark Zuckerberg before the mainstream media publish this news.

So, thousands of people started viewing this video. From this incident we can clearly understand that the social Media is competing high with the mainstream media. But I am not sure whether Social Media can overtake the traditional media. Because the social Media used to give and spread lot of fake news. It is very difficult to authenticate the reliability of the Social Media News.

What do you think about the Future of Social Media in the News delivering part? Will it overtake Traditional Media?

Blogging is a big hit, but many of us do not have the time or the writing ability to write long, interesting, blog posts every day or even several times a week. Don’t be fooled into thinking you have to. Nowadays there are many alternatives to standard blogging. One of the most popular is something called ‘mini blogging’ or ‘micro blogging’. Here are a few examples of micro blogging.
First on the list is Twitter. Everyone knows about this site, and almost everyone has already jumped on the Tweeting bandwagon. The simplicity and tiny 140 character space make for a vibrant and active blog space.
Second is the strange mishmash Tumblr. The flexibility of this platform makes it interesting but slightly harder to use. Like normal blogs, the writing space is not as limited, but Tumblr really shines with photos and videos. The younger generation really loves this platform and the share option is so easy to use that spreading a cool post is as easy as the click of a button.
There are tons more micro blogging sites. Present.ly allows business people to build a custom micro-blogging network that fits their company. Qaiku is a mini blogging site that uses Twitter to create a constant stream and monitor your impact as others mention you or your company. Hictu is a mini blogging site for posting short video, audio, and text. Video and audio posts have a 60 second maximum and text posts have a 160-character maximum. IRateMyDay is a mini blogging site created for the simple purpose of rating your day. Write short posts as you vent about your day. Posts have a 200-character maximum. StatusNet is an open-source enterprise social network that supports mini blogging and other blogging platform’s activity streams. Similar to Present.ly, it was created for companywide mini blogging.
Identi.ca is a mini blogging platform constructed on the free Status Net tool. You can post small text notifications about yourself or your company; where you are, what you're doing, or virtually anything you want. Posts have a 140-character maximum. Use Plurk to share your life or business through the web or mobile phone. Posts have a 140-character maximum. Posterous Spaces is a mini blogging platform with over 10 million visits per month. Share text, snapshots, video, audio; anything you want to share. You can also connect to other social networks and broadcast there. You can even make mobile posts with the iPhone or Android application. Floort is a site to tell the world what you think on just about any topic. Share your viewpoint and then find out what your followers think about what you said. DailyBooth is a mini blogging site for posting photographs and brief text about your life. Kontain is another site for mini blogging with pictures and short text. Rememble is a mini blogging site that unites text, photos, videos, sounds, and more. Their slogan is ‘join your content and share your life’.
There are probably more micro blogging platforms out there, but you get the idea. Anyone can share their thoughts in just a few sentences. Everyone has time for that. So, no more excuses. Become a blogger today and get the word out about what you care about.

Social networking platforms allow for interaction but as it happens in real life, you need to limit the time you give to social media to avoid wasting time by virtually spending your everyday life on one or the other social networking platform. This holds true for marketing professionals undertaking the task of social media marketing for an organization and even people in general who use social networking sites for interacting with people from across the world. It is important for you to bring some method to the madness before your productivity levels at work fall. Here's how you can avoid falling into the trap.

1. Allocate time to your social media activities
Give your undivided attention to your social media marketing or interaction activities while you are at it. Tweet, reply to messages, post on Facebook and other social networking platforms. Just when you are about to go beyond the time allocated, make the switch to take up other activities at hand. Professionals need to realize that work and leisure on social media do not go hand in hand.

2. Understand where to draw the line
It is good to keep the communication channels open but you must not allow these to turn into distractions. Make it a point to not allow your productivity levels to go for a toss just because a friend wanted to talk and you could not say no. Professional marketers too need to know that they have to get better results in limited time rather than spending all their time on social media.

3. Work according to a plan
Apart from the obvious use for interaction, social media is fast emerging as a tool for product promotion and brand building. Bloggers too use social networking platforms to get more traffic for their blogs. It is required then that you set your targets and chalk out the strategies for achieving the same. Analyze the results you get and tweak your implementation methodologies in accordance. Use tools to automate your posts so as to reach out to people when there is maximum activity on social networks.

4. Take note of your limitations
We might want to believe ourselves to be multi-taskers who can handle interaction on social media while attending to our professional commitments. Statistics tell a different story. Distraction due to indulging in social media activities while at work is a common cause of loss of productivity of about 2 hours per day.

5. Know your priorities
Organize your activities to highlight your priorities for each hour. Never allow your priorities to suffer for one reason or the other.
Social media has come as a refreshing change in our busy lives. These portals make it so much easier for people to interact not only with those they happen to know in real life but also people from different walks of life they can relate to or would like to follow for their expertise in certain domains. Marketers too get the convenience of reaching out to a large number of people in their target market segment. Social media interaction is here to stay then. All that is needed is a methodical approach to the process.

I had written many posts explaining the fast growth of Social Media and the need for the Business to use the Social Media to promote the products and services.

In this post I am going to write about an emerging Social Media "Pinterest".

Pinterest is a pinboard-styled social photo sharing website. Pinterest allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections(i-e as Boards and Pins). The site's mission statement is to "connect everyone in the world through the 'things' they find interesting."  Pinterest is managed by Cold Brew Labs, a team based in Palo Alto, California.

Pinterest.com  is popular among women. Time magazine listed Pinterest in its "50 Best Websites of 2011" column.

In January 2012, comScore reported that the Pinterest.com had 11.7 million unique users, making it the fastest site in history to break through the 10 million unique visitor mark

New users have to either get invitations from their friends or they have to request invitation from Pinterest itself for creating account in pinterest. And, the users have to connect their Twitter or Facebook account with Pinterest.

Many people are accusing pinterest for allowing the users to share the copyrighted images without the permission of the Copyright owner. For handling this issue, Pinterest has released a new html meta tag "nopin" to allow websites to opt out of their images being pinned

Few days back I requested pinterest for sending invitation. Once after making the request I got an email saying that my request is in "waiting list".

And, I got the invitation from pinterest next day.  I created the Pinterest account rajamanickam. I connected my Facebook account with my Pinterest account.

I have created one board motivational quotes and added few pins from our Motivational Quotes website TheQuotes.Net using the Pinterest Bookmarklet "PinMarklet". One Pin of my Board got 6 repins within few days.
You can share your pinterest experience thro' the comments.

And, you can see below an interesting Infographics about Pinterest.

We should have heard and  read the fact that having huge money is NOT enough to become a Successful Entrepreneur. Lot of Successful Start-ups were started with very low budget  in Small Garages, but with huge vision. We might have read success stories of such companies (e.g HP, Apple, Microsoft,Facebook, Google, Reliance,Ford, etc)

Randi Zuckerberg,  Former Marketing Director of Facebook, had clearly proved this Fact (i-e having huge money is NOT enough to become a Successful Entrepreneur) in a solid way by failing to bring up her start-up "R to Z Media" at specified time even then she is having huge money .

In August 2011, Randi resigned from Facebook to start "R to Z Media", but she couldn't couldn't launch her website RtoZMedia.com itself in the past 6 months.

Since Randi Zuckerberg was a former Facebook Marketing Director, I thought her initiative of new Social Media firm "RtoZ Media" will be a successful one. And, therefore I predicted huge search volume for the words "RtoZ Media" and "RtoZ". And, surprisingly I found that there is No Trade Mark issues for the names "RtoZ media" and "RtoZ". So, I registered few RtoZ name related websites to make use of the huge search volume for the keywords "rtoz media" and "rtoz".

Past 6 months I am monitoring the search volume and News about "R to Z", "RtoZ", "RtoZ Media" and RtoZMedia. Based on my observation, Randi is NOT able to bring up her Start-up initiative in the 6 months irrespective of her huge wealth. And, interestingly she started deviating her focus on some other things such as acting in a film "olive", speaking in conferences and promoting small brands thro' her twitter account and facebook page.

While announcing her "RtoZ Media" initiative, the Media gave more importance to Randi Zuckerberg related news. Guardian said,
She might not have a reputation as a cutting-edge innovator like her brother, but Randi is no slouch. She, too, went to Harvard, graduating in psychology at about the time Mark was dropping out to focus full-time on the phenomenon he had unleashed.

But I don't know what Media is going to tell about her now.

According to the below poll, most of the people didn't like the name "RtoZ media".

At the time of writing this post, more than 68% people voted as they didn't like the name "RtoZ Media". I couldn't understand how Randi's RtoZ Media will promote the brands of their customers while they were not able to understand/read people's thoughts.

So, we can clearly understand that having huge money is NOT enough to become a Successful Entrepreneur. Right? You can share your thoughts thro' the comments.

And, you can take this poll too.

Few weeks back Randi Zuckerberg had sent below Tweet.

The entrepreneur's dilemma: Maintaining friendships. Building a great company. Spending time w/family. Staying fit. Getting sleep. Pick 3.

I don't think any Entrepreneur will consider "Building a Great company" as an optional choice. What do you say? I welcome comments about it from Entrepreneurs and aspiring Entrepreneurs. And, I think the tweet should read as "A celebrity's Dilemma" instead of "The Entrepreneu's dilemma".

Few months back, I started a website RtoZ.Org by hoping that people can easily remember this name as the word "RtoZ" becomes popular because of the announcement about the RtoZ Media.

Initially I thought of using this site exclusively for publishing news about RtoZ Media. But it seems the RtoZ Media is NOT generating any news. Even then haven't launched their website itself.

So, I have decided to use this site for publishing news about any Social Media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin.

And, I am planning to focus more on developing and promoting this Social Media News Site.

I am setting up a Team to publish the high quality news articles at timely manner, and working on enhancing our internal tools further to get any latest news immediately.

I already applied for including this site in Google News.

Today we published below News articles.

Stumbleupon gets a face lift with its new makeover

India plans to regulate Social Media Sites such as Facebook.

The Top Twitter Topics and Hashtags of the Year 2011

I welcome your suggestions to improve the quality of our News site.

Since I am going to spent more time on this new site RtoZ.org , I may not publish posts here frequently. So, you can bookmark or remember to visit RtoZ.Org.

If you already subscribed to our Rss feed, you will get the contents from this new site also.

I had published a post about RtoZ Media few months back.

There were no further updates/progress about R To Z Media even if Randi Zuckerberg had made announcement about R to Z Media few months back itself.

Even the official website of R to Z Media "RtoZMedia.com" was NOT developed in these 3 months period. It was just showing the default page of Godaddy.

Questions were raised about the Future of the R to Z media.

It seems this condition is changing slowly. R to Z Media had taken initiative to actively involve in the business operations.

Now, atleast they came up with single page site including about R to Z Media logo and a form for registering our emails to get updates about R to Z Media.

And, this single page site shows below message above the Email registration form.

We are engaged in intersecting the world of traditional media with social technology.
Be the first to find out what that means for you

And, Randi Zuckerberg had given an interview about R to Z media.

First up, can you tell us a little about your new venture RtoZ Media? You've been relatively tight-lipped to date...

We're still in "stealth mode," but what I can tell you is that I've always been passionate about live events and making content more "social."  In my new company, I aim to work with some of the world's leading media companies and brands to bring a social layer to their products and content.

Randi with Celsea
You are founding RtoZ Media from scratch. What common challenges do entrepreneurs and new business start-ups face in terms of marketing, branding and building a social media presence?

The biggest challenge has been to come up with a single, clear mission statement that guides all of our business, marketing, and branding principles. There is so much we want to do, it's hard to boil it down to one mission. But that is crucial for the success of any business. I also think prioritization is a huge challenge – learning when to say "no" is a highly valuable skill, and just as important as saying yes!

And how are you addressing these at RtoZ Media?
I am building a great team. We keep each other honest and make sure that we are always prioritizing our work effectively and making decisions in line with the overall brand and strategy.

You graduated from Harvard with a psychology degree. To what extent has an understanding of people and human behaviour helped you in your roles at Forbes, Facebook and now RtoZ Media?
A fundamental understanding of why humans do what we do – why we think the way we think, why we make decisions to buy products, etc – has been extremely helpful to me. if it wasn't for psychology, I never would have discovered my passion for a career in marketing.
Let us see how it is coming up. An interesting thing is, lot of visitors are coming to this site by searching "RtoZ Media". According to the Bloggers stats and Google Analytics Reports, "RtoZ Media" is the Top 1 keyword which drives huge traffic to this blog even if  this blog is having very few articles about RtoZ media.

I am just wondering how people are started searching about "RtoZ media" while Randi is taking steps very slowly to promote her firm R to Z Media.

Today I came to know about About.Me, and I created my about.me profile at about.me/rajamanickam

And, I added my other social media profiles (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, ...) to my About.Me profile by giving permission for About.Me to access my other social media profiles and updates.

It is showing Klout Score as 38. And, it is showing below description.

@rajamanickam_a is a Socializer

You are the hub of social scenes and people count on you to find out what's happening. You are quick to connect people and readily share your social savvy. Your followers appreciate your network and generosity.

I am NOT much familiar about Klout Score and I don't know whether there is any significance for this Klout Score.

And, I would like to know the various ways to effectively use About.Me to promote our websites.

i-e I want to know whether I will be getting any benefits by adding my about.me profile link as my email signature instead of specifying other social media profile links.

You can share your thoughts about Klout score thro' the comments.

The leading Social Media Site Facebook.com is getting ready to face the tough competition from Google's recently released Social Media product Google plus.

Facebook is releasing new features continuously.  Recently Facebook added a Subscribe button   to the Facebook profile page for allowing the users to get updates from any other users without making them as friends.

And, Facebook has released "Smart lists" for allowing the Facebook users to have Google + circle like feature.
i-e The Facebook users can have more control  over the status updates visibility. i-e They can decide about what should be shared with whom by creating various lists e.g close friends, family, etc.

Apart from these functional changes, Facebook is changing navigation also. Now the Top menu is fixed at top at any time. i-e you will be able to see the top link always even if you scroll down to the bottom of the facebook page.

Although Delicious, a popular social bookmarking site, never quite caught on the way that many other “social” utilities on the web did, like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, owners of the incredibly popular video sharing site YouTube, recently bought Delicious from Yahoo!, hoping to redesign the service to attract more users.

Delicious, the brainchild of Joshua Schacter, began several years ago in 2003. It initially received $2 million dollars in funding, and became increasingly popular among technophiles who wanted to technology-related links categorized under various topics. In 2005, Yahoo! acquired Delicious. Delicious has quickly become one of the most popular social bookmarking websites, competing with the likes of Digg and Reddit. However, in 2010 it had been rumored after an internal leak that Yahoo! had intended on shutting down Delicious since they had not developed it much further after the acquisition. Later, Yahoo! clarified that it would

This summer, Chad Hurly and Steven Chen, founders of YouTube and owners of AVOS systems, the Internet company that spawned the now-famous video sharing site, acquired Delicious for an unspecified amount of money. The New York Times reported recently that Hurley and Chen are working toward restarting Delicious to be more user-friendly and less of a niche technology site. The Times article noted, describing upcoming changes:

“The current home page of Delicious features a simple cascade of blue links, the most recent pages bookmarked by its users, and it tends to largely be dominated technology news. But the new Delicious aims to be more of a destination, a place where users can go to see the most recent links shared around topical events, like the Texas wildfires or the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, as well as the gadget reviews and tech tips.”

Another change that Hurley and Chen envision is to give it broader audience that extends beyond its current technology-centered one. Another change was to make the site more personalized, so that the site will recognize your interests and suggest different links or “stacks” of links to you based on previous searches.

The article also noted that Hurley and Chen refuse to suggest that they are trying to compete with the likes of Facebook or Twitter. They explained that Delicious would be in a completely different category of social searching. While Google is good for quick and efficient searches, they said, Delicious is a tool that is more amenable to deep, involved searching on any given topic.

The new Delicious should launch sometime this year.
